Abbey Ferris

Director and Principal Clinical Psychologist

BPsych(Hons) MPsych(Clin) MAPS

Abbey is the director and Principal Clinical Psychologist at SWITCH. Abbey founded SWITCH after spending years developing her expertise across a broad range of mental health sectors. SWITCH was created to offer Newcastle the most progressive, evidence-based, and holistic approaches to mental health, performance, and overall well-being. This led Abbey to uncover the benefits of qEEG Brain Mapping and Neurofeedback Therapy. She is passionate about helping those experiencing diagnosable mental health conditions, Newcastle’s peak performers, and chronic pain sufferers alike.

Experience

Abbey has over 6 years of clinical experience and extensive training in globally renowned innovative psychological treatments. Abbey has worked in NSW Health at Maitland Hospital, in the acute setting, helping those with complex conditions. She led the Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills program and worked collaboratively to aid clients in high-risk crises.

Abbey then was offered an exceptional opportunity to work with the New South Wales Police Force as part of a world-first in-house officer rehabilitation and wellbeing program. She then led the state-wide roll-out of a resilience and suicide prevention training program. Abbey was renowned for being equally down to earth, across the scientific research and strategic in her approach.  She provided the highest quality support to police officers who are exposed to significant traumatic situations and dealing with the unique challenges of their important role. After much success, Abbey began working in private practice seeing a variety of different clients from those struggling with the inevitable stress of a high performer's busy world, workplace injuries, trauma, and other more complex issues.

Abbey was awarded a position in Australia’s first Mental Health Leaders Fellowship run by The National Mental Health Commission and Melbourne University. She acquired experiential and theoretical expertise in leadership and team optimisation.
